These problems have grown more apparent with the release of DeepSeek, an open-source AI design, adding to the already considerable challenges that big people like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic pose.
As someone with over four decades of experience in senior management and security, I’ve first-hand seen how scientific advancements can both enhance and degrade security. The current direction of Gen AI poses a significant danger to businesses, governments, and individuals around the world if left unchecked.
To stop the rise of AI-driven crime, brains robbery, and national security threats, we must address the security challenges inherent in Gen AI. The moment has come for serious actions.
How GenAI is changing cybersecurity
Gen AI’s capacity to launch highly powerful, automated cyberattacks is the most pressing issue. Contrary to what was done in the past when cybercriminals relied on simple social engineering strategies that exploited people error, AI models allow attackers to create almost invisible phishing emails, produce malware on demand, and even bypass conventional security protocols.
A perfect example of the creation of phishing problems is. Formerly, users may look for grammar mistakes or inconsistent emails to spot phishing attempts. Today, AI-generated phishing emails are completely organized, personalized, and contextually relevant, making them almost impossible to distinguish from legitimate communications.
Additionally, AI designs can create harmful code in a matter of seconds. While trustworthy AI engineers, like OpenAI, attempt to halt the creation of malicious code, some more recent open-source AI models give cybercriminals the freedom to develop their own attacks for each goal.
Development and security in the open-source debate
One of the biggest flaws in the Gen AI industry is the development of open-source designs. Open-source AI promotes technology and convenience, but it also removes significant security obstacles.  ,
Open-source models are almost impossible to manage once they are released, in contrast to proprietary AI models, which can be controlled and monitored. As a result, adversaries can alter these models to engage in extensive virtual war, spying, and financial fraud, which is a cybersecurity nightmare.
Unlimited AI access poses a clear threat to national security, with cleverness companies all over the world already concerned about AI models being hacked by adversaries. We run the risk of widespread abuse of delicate corporate and government information if open-source Gen AI continues to grow without protection.
Are we prepared for regulatory cracks?
Despite the obvious dangers, governmental efforts to regulate AI continue to be slow and divided. International opponents are utilizing AI quickly to engage in offensive cyber procedures while policymakers in the U.S. are still debating Artificial leadership. American companies are moving ahead on their own because the majority of conversations fail to address the necessity of security risks. Google recently announced that its use of artificial intelligence and another cutting-edge systems is being revised. The company removed the phrase “technologies that trigger or are likely to cause general harm,” “weapons or other technologies whose main purpose or implementation is to produce or instantly inflict harm on people,” “technologies that gather or use information for surveillance violating internationally accepted norms,” and “technologies whose purposes violate widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.”
The European Union has taken steps to control high-risk AI applications through its AI Act, but protection is still a challenge. Although there are conversations about AI safety standards, there is no coherent national strategy in the United States that mandates responsibilities for AI developers.
We require a coordinated effort to establish and uphold AI safety standards, including:
- Stronger supervision of AI developers: Gen AI companies must employ stringent security measures, including strategic cybersecurity testing and real-time threat monitoring.
- Managed access to AI models: Open-source AI shouldn’t be easily accessible without security checkpoints. Governments and leaders in the sector may work together to promote responsible Artificial use.
- AI-driven security solutions: We may engage in AI-powered surveillance methods that can identify and stop AI-driven attacks in real time, as opposed to letting AI serve as a resource for cybercriminals.
- Identity and access management options: We need tools like Photolok, a passwordless registration that uses handwritten images with replication and protects against AI bad actors.
The GenAI era’s future of cybersecurity
Gen AI’s rise is both a technological advance and a cybersecurity crisis. AI has untapped potential for innovation, but if left unregulated, its potential for harm is equally significant.
AI development must be grounded in cybersecurity, not an afterthought. Every major AI company, from OpenAI to DeepSeek, must assume the responsibility for making sure that their models don’t turn into cybercriminals ‘ tools. Policymakers must take action quickly to close the regulatory gaps before the situation becomes too untamed.
The threats are evolving, and the risks are real. We will face a cyberspace in which AI is used to demonize humanity if we don’t act right away. The moment has come to take action.
